Intelligent Healthcare Association Announces 2017 Award Recipients

NEW YORK, February 13, 2017 — The Intelligent Health Association (IHA) announced today the recipients of the IHA 2017 Awards, both special recognition and competitive. Each year IHA recognizes an individual or institution that has demonstrated leadership in the digital health community. In 2017, the IHA Special Recognition Award recipient is Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, Founder and Chief Executive Officer for NantHealth, which offers a systems-based approach to personalized healthcare integrating novel diagnostics with large-scale, biometric and phenotypic data to track patient outcomes and deliver precision medicine. Dr. Soon-Shiong will receive his award Monday February 20 at 11:20am at the IHA Pavilion, HIMSS17, Orlando, FL.

This year, IHA offered two competitive awards. The third award, the GRAND Award, is chosen from these two awardees.

  • The 2017 IHA Improving Patient Care and Health Delivery award is being presented to Hamilton Health Sciences for reducing inhospital cardiac and respiratory arrests using a novel mobile application. Hamilton Health Sciences is one of Canada’s top five research hospitals and is currently conducting research in over 1,500 centers across 86 countries. With the help of the ThoughtWire service team, they were able to pilot a working solution that was up and running in eight weeks. The results: Critical Care Response Team consults decreased 17 percent; CPR with Code Blue calls were reduced by six percentage points.
  • The 2017 Innovative Healthcare Award is being presented to Sentara Healthcare (Norfolk, VA), specifically their Sentara Princess Anne Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), for eliminating alarm fatigue and giving staff critical and timely tools in addressing patients’ needs. The wireless solution is a highly-coordinated effort among staff and vendors including the Vocera Engage alarm management and clinical communication solution incorporated with a Real Time Location System (RTLS), telecommunications, and patient monitors. The result was a 54 percent reduction in duplicative patient monitoring alarms, a 94 percent increase in staff satisfaction as it relates to alarm management, and overall improved quality of care for patients. Pioneers at heart, Sentara Healthcare gained worldwide recognition when America’s first in-vitro baby was born at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

The judges elected to recognize two nominations with Honorable Mentions.

  • Pensacola Beach, Fla-based Green Circle Health impressed judges with its breadth of scope and clarity of purpose that will have a huge impact on consumer health and wellness in the coming years. Green Circle Health’s GCH Platform allows users to store and track health data from hospitals and clinics as well as from their at-home devices. Revolutionizing how consumers use their health care data, Green Circle Health allows users to improve the treatment of chronic diseases and conditions which, according to the Centers for Disease Control, are among the most common, costly and preventable of all health problems.
  • The Center for Music Therapy, Inc., based in Austin (TX), intrigued and beguiled the judges with its Movement Tracks Project. To address the leading movement disorder in the US with fall-safety concerns (Parkinson’s Disease), the Center interfaces algorithm and methodologies to further develop sensory optimization strategies for pervasive use in smart, integrated, stationary and wearable biometric systems and devices for gait improvement.

Award recipients have been invited to participate in the Intelligent Health Association Awards ceremony at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) 2017 conference and exhibition in Orlando, Florida. The event is being held February 20, 2017, at 5:30pm at the Intelligent Health Pavilion’s Leadership Theater. (Booth 8361)

The judges for the competitive awards are as follows: Georgia Tech associate vice president for research, faculty interaction, Gisele Bennett; President and CEO of Asset Insights Sylvanus Bent; Virginia-based cybersecurity consultant Deborah Cooper; University of California-San Francisco professor Donna Hudson; University of Wisconsin distinguished researcher Alfonso Gutierrez; and consultant and retired Lucent Technologies manager, John Walz.

The IHA annual awards identify and recognize the most compelling healthcare projects incorporating wireless technologies resulting in sustainable impact on the patient experience, safety and healthcare facility operations. Additionally, the IHA awards are intended to educate the healthcare delivery industry. For more information, please visit ihassociation.org/awards.

3 days of Interactive Demonstrations and Keynote Speakers That Bring Together the Global Healthcare Community

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania: February 15, 2017 – The Intelligent Health Association is proud to be bringing its award-winning IHA Pavilion back to HIMSS 2017 for a 7th year. HIMSS will be held in Orlando from February 19th to 23rd, 2017. The Intelligent Health Pavilion’s goal is to raise the level of awareness and educate healthcare professionals on the integration and adoption of new technologies for improved patient care and safety and the patient experience.

The Intelligent Health Association for 2017 will bring together some of the top global technology firms to demonstrate “True, Real time, “I o T in the Healthcare Eco-system” through a series of demonstrations in its I o T Demo Theatre. The IHP will also feature key note speakers who are international luminaries in the Health eco-system such as: Dr. Patrick Soon Shiong, CEO of NantHealth; Greg Cassini, Senior VP of Health for Frost & Sullivan; Barry Runyon, Research VP, Gartner; Dr. Simon Kos, Senior Vice President of Global Health for Microsoft; Natasa Sokolovich, Executive Director, UPMC Telehealth; Don Jones of Script Translational Institute; Dr. Chris Landon, Director of Pediatrics, Ventura County Medical Center and Dr. David Metcalf, Researcher for the University of Central Florida.

“We are bringing together technology to create a community of care,” says Harry P. Pappas, CEO of Intelligent Health Association. “Our goal is to demonstrate how technology can lend itself to creating better, longer, healthier and safer lives for patients around the world.” A passionate advocate for collaboration to create global wellness, Harry truly believes that the i-Home is a shift towards pro-care. “With the advent of the smart phone and other specific technologies, the point of care has transferred from the hospital to the home and will increase patient compliance and data collection to improve patient health outcomes.”

The i-Home focuses on health and wellness and was launched in 2014 as part of the Intelligent Health Pavilion. Along with the Intelligent Hospital, the Pavilion’s i-Home showcases relevant use cases, a combination of both smart home (consumer-oriented) technologies, and clinical and medical technologies that have been successfully deployed in connected smart homes.

“As the healthcare ecosystem shifts from fee-for-service to a value-based model with consumers/patients having to finance a greater portion of the cost burden, clinical services are becoming commoditized,” says keynote speaker Natasa Sokolovich. “Price transparency, convenience and low-cost treatment alternatives are the new normal and successful providers and payors are identifying and embracing technology which allows them to redefine the way that care is delivered in order to meet consumer expectations. This is an exciting time in healthcare as the focus shifts away from “brick and mortar” hospitals and care settings to meet the patient where they are- at home, at work…virtually everywhere.”
